After an overnight stay in Fort Bragg, I really enjoyed the charm of coastal Mendocino County. I liked the small town feel, yet it had it's own unique feel to it because of the fact that it's on the Pacific. I am considering living here, only for seasons though, so it would be considered a summer or winter home type thing, or just a weekend get away from the Bay Area. I really liked Fort Bragg, like I said. Do you have any recommendations on which town in Mendocino county would be worthwhile to make one's residence? How do the towns stack up against each other. What are the average prices in Fort Bragg? What is the living and quality of living like in these towns on the coast? Can I find an home on the water in Fort Bragg?

Obviously, you can see I am full of questions. I really want to know what it's like to live here. Any suggestions would be of help.

Thanks

My favorite area in the state. There just is no work. Since the mill closed employment is very low, great for retirement. You can buy a nice home with a ocean view for a very reasonable price. Mendocino itself will have the most employment as it does have a tourist base.

You might also want to look at southern coastal Mendocino county. Gualala, Anchor Bay, and Point Arena offer a mixture of housing prices and rentals, shopping, restaurants, small businesses, cultural events, and outdoor activities. Not much in the job area though. Banana belt weather (less summer fog) attracts a mixture of retirees, part time second homeowners, weekenders from the Bay Area, and tourists.

I used to live on the Mendocino Coast.

Yes.

The FB/Medocino area tends to be touristy. Casper is kinda nice, being off the main drag and not really visited by tourists nearly as much as FB and Mendocino. Mendocino feels like a movie set. And unless things have changed since I lived in the area, not real welcoming.

Little River is nice, but has a bit of a ritzy feel. Albion is, well......uh different. Sometimes refered to as the Berkeley of the North Coast.

When you get to Elk and points south it has much quieter and friendlier atmosphere. Point Arena/Manchester is pretty much as it was 20-30 years ago with little tourist influence.

Just a note, if it matters. Mendocino Coastal society is very New-Age. Lots of Occult stuff and witchcraft. And my guess is that marijuana is used more often by the local populace than wine/beer. Also the summers tend to be rather foggy. More so than Coastal Bay Area. Plan on running your wood stove during the summer.

If I were to live in the FB/Mendo area my top choices would be Casper, East of FB on Sherwood Road or Little Valley (a few miles north of FB). Personally I would prefer to be a few miles inland as the summer fog can get real old after a solid week or two with no breaks.

help! i want to go camping at caspar beach with my 8 year old the weekend of sept 10-12. We would be tent camping. I am having trouble imagining what the daytime weather will be like if it's in the mid-60s. will we even want to be out on the beach? several places said september is the best month up there, so will we be ok in shorts and sweatshirts or t shirts? should we bring jackets and many blankets for night time? i'm from sac and it's always in the upper 80's and 90's right about now so to me 65 seems real cold! the weather is the only thing making me hem and haw. otherwise i really want us to camp up there. it is the weekend after labor day and should be real quiet.

thanks!

Pack for all seasons. Bring jackets as evenings can be brisk. Rain happens. It is often overcast but clears up nicely.
I found that a simple candle heats a tent up real cozy in the winter.

Overcast at most. It will be 75 or so. The ocean is cold up there.
