My husband and I are searching for a nice smaller town/city ( pop: 20-100,000 ish) to relocate to in California (or surrounding states). We prefer a "progressive" green mentality, as we eat organic, enjoy the arts, and celebrate diversity. A nice downtown would be a plus. We are middle-of-the-road politically, and desire to be in a place with more moderate summers and winters. Sunlight (less on-going cloud cover) is important to us and we our budget to buy a home is between 450-550K. We love the ocean, but living right next to it isn't a must. Any input would be much appreciated.

Check out San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz. If you want more sun, since these places do get some fog in the summer and can get very chilly in the winter, check out the small cities in south Orange County like San Clemente, Laguna Beach or Newport Beach, or north San Diego County like Carlsbad or La Jolla, but these cities definitely aren't as a "green" or "organic" or eclectic as the first three I mentioned. Much more of the slightly older, wealthy republican crowd if you know what I mean. But compared to most other places in the country they are still pretty liberal and into health and fitness and art and stuff, they just don't like paying taxes. Plus these cities, unlike the first three, are in the middle of urban sprawl and jam packed I-5 freeway, but they are beautiful and the weather is fabulous.
