Not in this family. I'd rather my kids use other four letter words.

Well it's Colombia, actually (Columbia is a river in the PNW). But that is the primary objection, I think. The name is already taken. That's where the impression of ignorance comes in. One gets the feeling that people who say "Cali" for California are so poorly educated in geography or so narrow in their world experience that they don't even know that "Cali" is the name of a major city in South America with several million inhabitants. It's kind of like asking what wrong with using "Chico" as a diminutive for "Chicago."

The same name exists for several things and the context is used to differentiate. In Boston, when one says the "Sox" it is known what they mean. Same thing said in Chicago is something different, yet people still know what it means.

Same thing here. Nobody in the California forum is talking about the city in Colombia. No one here thinks they are talking about the city in Colombia. So why the criticism?

What exactly is the problem with using or writing the term "Cali"? People get really upset when they read a poster using the term "Cali" and I was just wondering, is there a specific reason? Or is it just that most people do not like the way it sounds?
That's the difference between the ONLINE world and the REAL world. I've never seen anyone take offense to the nickname Cali in person, only on this forum. I've also heard more people in person refer to California as Cali than California. I think Cali sounds stupid, but it's much shorter than saying California. Anyways, I wouldn't worry about it...the people complaining about it here are the same people who complain about their neighbor's house color or every other trivial thing in the world. The only difference is no one will even bother giving them two seconds of their time in person, so they whine online, where everyone is a tough guy.

btw...COLOMBIA the country is NOT also known as COLUMBIA the city or state! It's spelled with an O in English. It's not the same as Italia or Italy...this debate always irritates me because it shows how f**&ing stupid and UPTIGHT some people are! lol

The people who hate the term are just a bunch of old farts who view the abbreviation as a symbol of pop and hip hop, trendy culture that gives off a false impression of their entire state as being like the place featured in 2 pac's rap video "California Love". I feel their pain, because ever since the show "OC" came out I hate the term OC for those same reasons (I think I even hated it before that). But they really shouldn't take it so seriously. I don't think anyone over the age of 34 uses the term Cali.

Columbia works for the Country, unless you refer to Italy as Italia, Greece as Hellas, Spain as Espana, Germany as Deutschland, Sweden as Suomo, etc.

I happen to be an old fart that does not equate Cali with pop or hip hop as I am entirely ignorant of the inner happenings of that culture, I have no idea what a 2 pac is, although Tupac was one of the last Inca Emperors, nor have I seen or heard of a rap video called California love" or anyother name applied to any rap video.

Cali is just stupid, as Frisco is Stupid. Who calls Alaska, Ala, or Arizona as Ari, or Colorado as Colo, or New York as New etc, etc, etc?

For the last time...COLOMBIA is spelled COLOMBIA in ENGLISH!

ITALIA is spelled ITALY in ENGLISH!

Look at any world map written and ENGLISH and you will see ITALY and COLOMBIA!

This really shows many Americans suck at geography and in general knowledge about the world.
It's embarrassing to me.

Now about the nickname argument...

Philideplhia - Philly
Boston - Beantown
New York City - Big Apple

Grow up and get a hobby for crying out loud!
If you don't like the word, don't use it. If you don't like gay people, don't be friends with them. If you don't like pink, don't paint your house pink. Who cares what your neighbors are doing as long as it's not harming anyone.

Ala, Colo, New, just don't sound good. Cali has a ring to it. I actually know a girl named Cali (She wasn't named after the state). I don't know anyone named Ala or Colo. I'm sure some of the lingo you used when you were young, your parents thought it was stupid too.
