Hello! My boyfriend and I are considering a move to the Lake Tahoe area. I would like some advice on what to expect and the best place to live.

We are 25 and 30, and while we don't like to party every night, we do like a good local "nightlife" scene. Something that is relatively happening most nights of the week and not just the weekends.

We are also very active and love the great outdoors, so access to hiking, biking, swimming, etc is also needed.

My boyfriend plays poker for a living. We currently live in Las Vegas but are looking for a place that is a little friendlier/happier. Is there a good poker scene in Tahoe? Obviously we are aware that there probably won't be as many options but we are just curious.

If there is a place that we could get all three of these things in one that would be great. Any advice/tips would be appreciated.

Also, not sure if it's a huge factor but we have a dog. Thanks!

I can't speak to the Poker scene, but the South Lake Tahoe area (aka the South Shore) has some mid sized casinos. Tahoe is basically two worlds. SLT is basically about the casinos, and the Heavenly Ski resort. Ski during the day (winter), hit the casinos at night. Not much else, besides hanging out on the beach-doing water sports and sight seeing. Lots of average city types. Some dumpy areas/motels.

The North Shore (basically the northern two thirds of the basin including Truckee) is for the outdoors types. Champion skiiers and MTN bikers live and visit. World class hiking. Everywhere you look you see fit, athletic types.

There is night life in both parts of the Basin, but the quality is much higher in the North Shore as is the food. We have randomly picked restaurants in the NS and have yet to find a bad one. Can't say the same in SLT.

Put simply, if you are outdoor types go North.

Oh and BTW the Tahoe Basin/Truckee area is really expensive housing-wise. But as they say, you get what you pay for.

If I were your age, I would jump at the chance to live in the North Tahoe/Truckee area for a year or two.

Edit: Wanted to add, Reno is an easy drive from Truckee/North Shore

I don't think the South Lake casinos would put up with a professional poker player for long - there's really only a couple of them, and once you've started making regular bank they would be keeping their eyes on you. Reno is bigger and has more options, you'd probably do a lot better there.

Either side of the lake is a paradise for outdoorsy people.
