Got to pay for those 1,000,000+ salaries

U.C. considers 32 percent tuition hike
The University of California could raise undergraduate tuition by as much as 32 percent next year if a series of state tax extensions championed by Gov. Jerry Brown aren't enacted, UC officials announced Wednesday.
California residents would pay nearly $14,700 in annual tuition, a price tag that doesn't include room, board and campus fees.

It's still a good deal even with the tuition hike.

Still, today's challenge isn't paying for UC, it's getting into UC. As a parent of four kids, I am more worried my kids won't have the 3.8+ HS GPA required to get into these schools. Cal and UCLA are Ivy League selective.

If it makes anyone feel any better, when I started college at Cal State Northridge back in 1979, it was $350 tuition, $100 for expensive engineering books, and $50 for everything else per semester. That's it, $500 per semester. Plus I lived at home where my dad charged me $300/month room and board.

Average Cal-State now is about 3000 tuition, book, misc fees for 12
+units per Semester. Room and board about 3800 per semester. Median averages depending on classes and type of boarding.

So, have the UC schools reviewed their cost structure and evaluated where they could reduce overall operating expenses?

Or, are they just passing along cost without appropriate belt tightening?

UC is the finest public university system in the world. It costs money to attract the best faculty. The only 2 overpaid people I see on the first page is those 2 Cal sports officials.

Otherwise, I see a lot of UCSF and UCLA medical school folks and by the way, both UCLA and UCSF medical centers are among the 10 best hospitals in the United States according to US News and World Report.

While I believe in cutting the fat, this is one situtation where I wholeheartedly believe we need to raise taxes to fund it. Absolutely.

This is not an expense. This is an investment in our future. At some point, we need to agree on what's important. Sometimes the slash-and-burn, scorched-earth way of looking at any expenditures is really self defeating.

I'm sure glad my son got a full academic scholarship to Cal. (Yeah I'm braggin') Looks like I may have to pick up the difference if the tuition goes up. I think the tuition for next year is somewhere around $11.8K for the year.

That's less than a 6% annual increase in 32 years, still that is more than inflation I think.

There are lots of tax efficient ways to do this. For example, gift mutual funds to your kid and let him cash them out and he pays the capital gains based on his tax bracket.

+1

Congrats. You deserve to brag a little. It cant be overstated the role that parents play in the success of their children's education--thanks!

Like I said, this is our future folks, if we don't take stock in it, who will?

Well........ The mutual funds have been used to keep all the underwater real estate going. I've got of tax loss carry forward to use. I think he may be in a higher tax bracket than me.
