I think that being a Californian is more a state of mind than anything else. It's easy to tell on this thread who has it and who doesn't. For all of you who are complaining, whether you live here or not, please leave. We don't need you. You are part of our over-population problem and not a positive part of it. All our problems are because too many people have moved here from all over the earth. CA is the most creative, energetic, industrious place on earth. If that doesn't excite you then forget about the climate. Either come because you love this place and want to contribute to it, or stay home.

Consider the location and climate carefully. You are in a position to pretty much leave where you want. NoCal is a big place with amazing variety in cities, towns, climate, topography, etc. You can drive 5-10 miles and experience several climate zones. We have 6 different climate zones in San Diego County alone, from the beach to alpine forests, all within 45 minutes of each other. In the SF Bay Area, SF has a different climate from the East Bay, which is different from the Dublin/Pleasanton area, which is different from Tracy, which is different from Stocton/Modesto/Sacramento, which is different from the Gold Rush towns on Hwy 49.

If I was you I would start looking at San Luis Obispo up to Santa Rosa, then across the valley to some of the largest Gold Rush towns as far north as Nevada City, which is spectacular. No Cal is more intellectually stimulating than

than SoCal, witness Berkeley and Stanford, etc. It's not an accident that the Bay Area produced Silicon Valley and the LA area produced Hollywood.

Take your time but have fun! If you come, you'll be living near the tallest and biggest and oldest trees in the world. Our state is beautiful and spectacular and FUN...but don't come unless you find that you and your family have California bloodlines. If you do, then we need you and want you. Good luck whichever you choose.

Funny that you say that: I was pegged by quite a few people in the Wash DC area as having that 'California vibe'.

Note though I am referring to the Golden State of another era when it was still affordable to regular folks.

Haaahaaa. Norcal used to be my home and now is my second home due to family and friends. It makes me laugh when someone suggests buying a holiday home there. That money spent to buy a "holiday home" can buy you so much more elsewhere. Everytime I go to my second home in the bay area it's nothing exciting.

However, when it's arctic cold back east it is kind of nice to be back to my old home. Other than that that's about it.

Most people think I'm crazy, but for the longest time I've had a desire to move to california, specifically Northern California. The main reason, and pretty much the only reason, is because of the weather and the outdoor lifestyle that it gives you.

But I have such a good life right now, which is why people think I'm nuts. I'm in my early 40's, and I've built a very successful dental practice in Mclean Va, one of the wealthiest areas in the country. My practice is in my home so I have no commute. My kids are in one of the best school districts in the entire nation. My home is located literally within 30 minutes of EVERYTHING (airports, some of the best malls found anywhere- Tysons Corner, great food, great entertainment, great churches). I have a house at the shore about 3 hrs away so my family and I can enjoy the beach living. I also have family in the area.

Still, I can't stand the weather. In the summer (right now). It is so hot and humid that it is simply torture to be outside. walking, biking, sitting on the porch all are simply miserable in the humidity and heat, not to mentions the bugs- mosquitos, horseflies, etc. We have nice spring and falls, but they seem too short. Once winter rolls in it is just gray, cloudy, and cold. The first snow is always fun, but then is just becomes a lot of work dealing with the snow and ice.

So the truly nice days, where it is sunny, not too hot, with low humidity are just few and far between. I figure we get maybe 2-3 weeks in total of perfect weather here in any given year .

So that is why I want to move. Everyone thinks giving all I have here up for near perfect weather just isn't worth it. What do you say?
You should spend a month or two out here and see what you really think. The weather in Spring and Summer in nor cal is nice but can be cold in winter. The higher north you go, the more rain you have to deal with. Southern CA has the best weather, especially San Diego--probably WORLD CLASS weather, which is the reason so many people want to live here. If you can afford it, which you probably can, it can be a nice life. Hope that helps.

You've either smoking too much crack or you've smoked too much organic cali veggies - try living on the northeast and then say that too many people live in cali.

Norcal more intellectually stimulating - haaaahaaaahaaa - funniest thing I've heard anyone say all year! You must be into venture captial to come up with a line like that. Those ventue capitalists waste 16 hours a day at work and look at drywall and computer screens and don't even realize the natural scenery in cali. Except when the company sends them to a business development or venture fund raising event in a cali resort.

Just how bad is California's economy? Some politicians are calling for the federal government to launch what sounds a lot like a Marshall Plan for the state.

A trio of Democratic legislative leaders asked Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger today to rescue California from economic stagnation by pressuring Congress for more aid to the state.

In a letter to the governor, Don Perata and Darrell Steinberg (Senate president pro tem and pro tem-elect, respectively) joined Assembly Speaker Karen Bass to argue that any economic stimulus plan passed in Washington must have some specific medicine for California's particularly sick economy.

"Such aid to states is not unprecedented and was a key component of the economic stimulus packages enacted by Congress and approved by the President following the 9/11 attacks," the letter says.

"Without state and federal intervention, many more families will be forced to rely on public assistance, putting increased pressure on a shrinking tax base. These trends pose a serious threat to California's economic future," the trio wrote, asking for focused investment in California and other distressed states.

Pal: you are fast crossing the line into Trolldom; you clearly like 'back east' which I can respect----------yet you keep coming into the California Forum and belittling this state.

Yes; I do think that the Wash DC area is a toxic waste dump..........but, if I ever post there or in the NoVa Form-----------I try to watch my manners. Does us all a favor and extend us that same respect.
