Those roads you talk about into the Panamints, Pleasant Canyon, South Park Canyon and Goler Wash are all in Death Valley at higher elevations.. You may want to nit pick and add National Park to Death Valley, we are talking about the same place. The reason why there are few deaths in the Panamints is that the typical visitor to those places is prepared and experienced in Desert Travel. To recommend that inexperienced visitors enter those areas is as I stated above.

Let us say for a minute that they take your advice, since George is no longer at Ballarat to dissuade them, they head up South Park, and at Chicken Rock, they shade just a little to the left. November 2009

Good suggestion. I'm thinking that might be too far though. I think the most we are willing to travel is 4 hours each way.

Even in the summer above 6,000 feet temps are tolerable, and there are is a surprising amount of water. Here is a DV creek;

Do people a favor. Don't camp where people are.

Nobody wants to be camped in the same area where six drunk guys are being loud.

Then what about the Big Bear area? Various levels of camping (remote or built up), mountain biking, lake stuff, off roading? That's a nice area during the summer and a lot closer to you?
