I think your recollection has been somewhat deluded over the years. I'm fairly certain it doesn't snow in the valley, not any city that is both within 1-2 hours away from the coast and Yosemite.

Lol, wait, Ben Hur? It's over 3hrs to the coast though and not sure if it snows there.

North of San Francisco and its snows and it's 2 hours from both the coast and Yosemite?
Hmmmmmmmm.
Any chance you can track down that friend?
And if you're going to explore California you might want to consider an alternative to just hitting all of the towns mentioned in the posts otherwise, if your trip is limited in that way, you will be missing the best, most beautiful and magical places in the state.
Below is a map of California with counties included.
Yosemite is in Mariposa County.
It takes me roughly 5 hours to drive from Santa Cruz ([in Santa Cruz county] and a bit of that time involves getting out of a somewhat congested area) to Yosemite Valley which is in the western most part of Mariposa county.
Since this map doesn't give a mile key i'm just giving you an idea of time re; traveling from the coast to Yosemite on a particular route.
Maybe it's in the foothills of the Sierra ... in like Placer county? And maybe your time for travel is just a bit off.
Or maybe it's Van Vleck in El Dorado county. lol.
And the assumption that the town is somewhere in the central valley is perhaps an erroneous one ... which would be a good thing.
I'm curious too.
This is a fun game.

ooops .... that should say the eastern most part of Mariposa county.
A "dyslectic" moment.

I believe you are talking about Twain Harte (named after authors Mark Twain and Brett Harte). T.H. is a very charming Sierra town at the 3500' level and receives a bit of snow in the winter months. Twain Harte is well known and enjoyed by Bay Area residents. See Twain Harte Vacation Rental for area info.

My In laws/Out laws used to live in Twainharte. It snowed quite a bit when we visited.

We loved fishin', boonie camping near Strawberry, & the Dardanelles area.
