Hey guys so I was wondering if anyone has ever attempted to Jet Ski to Catalina Island from Newport Harbor or any other nearby Harbor. I'm very interested in doing this sometime next month and I'm looking for some advice. Thanks!

In a small boat but never on a jet ski. Are you doing this solo?

Myself along with a group of friends are interested in attempting this.

The channel can kick up pretty good so be well prepared. You should get good up-to-date marine weather conditions before you leave, wear a wetsuit, bring a vhf marine radio and a personal beacon. Don't try it alone. If you have a friend with a boat I would recommend you include them in the group.

I would never try this or recommend anyone to try. I would also never try it again in a 19' runabout. But I was young once and did some stuff I about.

Pick an overcast morning when it's flat and glassy. Take shark repellant for when you fall off (jk).

After a couple of experiences with something akin to "The Most Dangerous Catch" out in the middle of the channel I'd say, yes, however, have a rescue plan.

What's the range on a jet ski?

Modern mid-range 4 stroke PWCs use about 5 gallons per hour at cruising speeds - say 35 MPH. Most now have fuel tanks in the 15 gallon range. So that might mean 75 miles of range. High perfomance models (supercharged for example) can burn 7-10+ GPH.

I don't consider this an impressive feat. Swimming the channel or at least kayaking it maybe.

On a jet ski? Make sure you bring a gas can with you.
