Lake Tahoe residents vs. tourists (ideology, etc.) (Independence: casino, camp)

In a recent trip to Lake Tahoe, I found the amount (and type) of traffic to be a downer, and wonder if those were mostly tourists. Is the endless flow of gas guzzlers and status cars on Lake Tahoe Blvd. and Hwy 50 mainly a weekend phenomenon?

In a Rite Aid parking lot I saw some people who'd probably been on the Rubicon Trail, with that whole "don't regulate us" attitude. You can spot these people on sight. They're the same types who forced a shutdown of Spider Lake by leaving their feces and TP on the granite. They were changing a tire in the parking lot and gloating over their rigs. Too out of shape to actually walk the route.

I am trying to gauge the typical personality type that lives in Lake Tahoe, if there is such a thing. Is Fox News popular up there?

Also, is there any standout difference between south shore and north or west shore people?

While politics happen, most people at Tahoe are there for the out of doors (south shore is a bit of an exception because of the number of jobs at the casino blob at Stateline. But most folks would rather argue sail or power, alpine or telemark than politics.

Jeepers like anyone else can be responsible or irresponsible. They tend toward littering the landscape, particularly with Blue Bud Lite cans, but, there are responsible Jeepers, being responsible is a matter of personal integrity, some folks have it, some don't.

There are a number of popular multiday cross country ski tours in the Sierra, the High Route for instance, travels from east of Independence to Sequoia Park. It takes a week, is mostly above 11,000 feet. Every skier on the route makes 5 or 6 "deposits" complete with TP. Since most skiers use the same camp locations, and since it is all on snow, the deposits sit on the snow, hundreds of them, until the snow melts.

In the Spring you can see hundreds of doo doos and ragged piles of TP. This is all left by generally highly responsible wilderness travelers..

Waste and mess in our public lands is not limited to one user group.

Remember folks, at least burn (not really advisable in our grasslands and chaparral in summer.) and bury your TP, bury your waste. There are those who advocate packing it into ziplock bags and carrying it out, that is required on Mt Shasta, that is the environmentally superior alternative.

I've been through the Rubicon many times in a vehicle and the only trash or feces I ever encountered was left by hikers and backpackers. Everyone I've ever been on a trail with would go out of their way to pick up trash, even from someone else.

As far as the Fox News comment, I can only assume that you're making a very ignorant assumption about people you don't know...

This is really the same comment the OP made, you just switched user groups. The truth is, it isn't jeepers or hikers or backpackers, it is morons. Unless you saw the depositions being made, I don't know how you can tell which user made the deposit.

I can take you on many and OHV trail full of TP, empty beer cans and unburied human waste. I can also take you on hiking trails and find much the same.

In an hour I will take my horse out on a trail in a nearby public land. The trail parallels a country road for half a mile. Along this half mile is TP. No beer cans, they are in the brush on the other side of the road. It is obvious that people park along the road, drink beer and wine and other weird sweet stuff, they throw the bottles down the hill into the brush, and do their relieving on the other side of the road along the trail.

These people are morons.

While I agree regarding the TP and human poop, I just wanted to point out that horse poop on the trail is only slightly less bothersome.

I realize that not much can be done and it is just how it is with horses...but just sayin'.

Interestingly, horse poop has never been shown to transmit disease to people. It has a smell until it dries, and is unsightly. For us country people it is not an unpleasant smell, and we like to kick the used oats, which is why we are often called, usedoatkickers, or something like that.

As you know, human "stuff" is truly nasty stuff.

I have spent most of my life on trails and I have never seen anyone over the age of 4 leave feces on trails.... or near trails..... But maybe that is just me.

Personally, when I gotta go, I get as far away from the trail/dirt road as possible without getting lost. And I cover it up.
