I'm curious what cities would have a decently priced rental market that would allow me to work in Santa Barbara but not go broke while doing that?

It also depends greatly on what you can afford. While those area mentioned would be cheaper, depending on what you drive, you could easily be adding 200-300 a month in gas with the hour commute.
