Interesting.

I recall he was engaged in a long term project to develop this and part of that included his now famous factfinding mission to Texas.

Quote:
SAN JOSE — Today, Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom unveiled his Economic Growth and Competitiveness Agenda for California, articulating a vision for success in building the Next Economy in the great State. Newsom was joined by over 200 business, labor, education and government leaders at an event held at Wyse Technology in San Jose, California.

For over a decade, California has lacked a comprehensive economic and workforce development strategy, leading to a severe lack of focus and inefficiency in California’s ability to work with business. Shortly after being elected Lieutenant Governor, Newsom began work to develop a comprehensive economic and workforce strategy.

The new agenda presented today focuses on eight pillars that are essential in delivering the Next Economy, including:

· Gearing up Exports: MOD CUT

· Reinvigorating Manufacturing: MOD CUT

· Driving Innovation: MOD CUT

· Accelerate the Clean Economy: MOD CUT

· Skill up for Opportunities: MOD CUT

· Build Infrastructure: MOD CUT

· Align with Regional Strengths: MOD CUT

· Organize for Success:MOD CUT

Reinvigorating manufacturing will run headlong into AB32.

Of the initiative areas, only one ("clean economy") is reasonably unique to California. The rest is motherhood and apple pie stuff. I would laugh just as hard if Rick Perry said it about Texas.

Newsome doesn't say one thing about how to accomplish these things.

Pretty much my thoughts too ..Another thing.. things have a pace.. markets and the economy determine it .. you can't accelerate economics/markets .. you'll fail.. So cleantech will come at its own pace .. As it becomes more economically feasible, adoption will increase .. Can't accelerate people to adopt new tech no matter how much innovation you stir up .. same rules apply.

In general, sounds like a pep rally talk as opposed to an unveiling of how he plans to cure California's economic ills...

Further, due to the tax, regulation, and cost structure of California.. Manufacturing aint coming back and it can do nothing short of serving tax payer up on a platter to bring it here (which i dont discount).

In all, nothing was unveiled...

It is laughable about how some have knocked down this plan after many months of crying about how businesses are leaving California. When an economic plan is released, it is already slammed by those who have not offered ideas on how to get this state economy thriving other than cut taxes.

Any plan that does not tackle the underlying regulatory excesses and immense power of unions is no plan at all.

Did you read the PDF file? The below quotes were taken out of that economic plan:

Quote:
In its 2009 report, “Manufacturing 2.0: A More Prosperous
California,” The Milken Institute called manufacturing “the canary
in the coal mine” for the California economy.13 “Our research
shows that manufacturing—both traditional and high-tech—still
drives California’s economy in many ways, but the state is losing
ground to other states and nations because of its regulatory
climate, tax burden, and reputation as a difficult and costly place to
do business.

California must tackle the issues of costs and regulation, as
Milken recommended: “Streamlining the regulatory procedures
for manufacturers, increasing transparency and accountability in
the regulatory process, and encouraging long-term investment
through new policy tools—all of (these) can be achieved without
relaxing or changing a single regulatory standard.

Quote:
The state must consolidate permitting and regulatory reviews
into a single agency and give it the explicit mandate to simplify
to the greatest possible extent business development, creation
and retention efforts
http://ltg.ca.gov/docs/LGN_Econ_Agenda.pdf

Furthermore, this is an economic plan. Unions is an entirely different issue.

Do you think what Newsome said constitutes a plan? Unless there is much more that what was linked above, he just stated goals. How is he going to reinvigorate manufacturing? Is he going to call Steve Jobs and ask him to start making iPhones in California instead of China?
