Hello, I am moving back to Bakersfield next week after living in Round Rock for the last seven years. I normally take I-10 back to California but am thinking of taking I-40, which would involve driving through most of Central Texas (29-84-20-84-40). I am also thinking of taking I-10 until I get to Phoenix, then jumping up I-17 to catch I-40 all the way through Barstow (58) to Bakersfield.

Any thoughts, suggestions, recommendations?? I am leaving next Thursday afternoon and plan to arrive in Bakersfield on Saturday since I am driving the 16' moving truck.

Thanks!

Had a friend who moved from Texas back to California last year. He took the I-10 route through Phoenix, although his final destination was Los Angeles. You should look at taking the I-15 north to Barstow, then come to Bakersfield via 58.

Or just go straight to Los Angeles then go up north over the grapevine and come down to Bakersfield via I-5 then Hwy 99. Looking at the map, I'd probably opt for going through Los Angeles since it is more direct to the final destination instead of being all over the map.

The best route is any one that doesn't end in Bakersfield!

Veyr true. It decidedly has its loyalists, as it should. I just don't happen to be one of them, in case it wasn't obvious. Three years of working narcotics in the city and environs rather soured me on it. I was likely jaded by the experience but I did find it to be rather insular.

Was just poking fun at you, Curmudgeon.

Yes, Bakersfield is not perfect or glamorous like the other cities but people can still call it home despite some of its negative points.

As I recall, you resided in Bakersfield several decades ago. A lot has changed since then.

No doubt. The westward push had just begun when we left and I'm sure it has had a very real and positive impact with increased revenues for the city which should benefit everyone.

Is there any hope for Oildale or is it still frozen in the 50s?

Nope. Just the many tweekers who get upset when the sheriff and city police come visit.

Sounds like many parts of the SW and SE US. Actually, I lived in Des Moines years ago and traveled to Kansas City and St. Louis for business. They were (and probably still are) damn rough towns. Makes Bakersfield look like Mayberry by comparison. Springfield's nice for a larger town, but much of Missouri can be kind of rough.
