Thought I'd compare the two most famous gayborhoods on the West Coast. I know the actual places are totally different, since the Castro is just a neighbourhood in SF while West Hollywood is a separate city, but how do the gay scene's in each place compare? In terms of size, vibrancy etc...West Hollywood doesn't seemed defined by it's GLBT associations, I didn't really detect a 'gay vibe' when I visited (I was more interested in it's film/music history). Haven't been to the Castro, but I would imagine it's 'gayness' would be very obvious.

Actually Long Beach has a much larger gay presence than Hollywood could hope for.

WeHo has a slightly older demographic from what I could tell. Seemed a bit lower key in certain respects. Obviously more extensive as noted, than the Castro.

Really? I haven't really noticed that, but WeHo is where the younger gay crowd flog to here in Southern California and the city caters more towards the younger/single/couple crowd. Long Beach has more of a mixed demographic while Palm Springs definitely has a older, more settled down demographic.

You didn't detect a gay vibe in WeHo?
Santa Monica blvd between Crescent Heights and Doheny is VERY gay. lol
Melrose to the south is heavily retail/arts oriented, while Sunset blvd to the north is definitely more straight. (Clubs/Music Venues/Hotels, etc)

That's probably why, my experience of West Hollywood was limited to Sunset. Went to the Viper room and drove down it a few times, that's about it lol.

Traditionally WeHo was whiter/more upscale (still true) while Silver Lake was more working class and racially mixed. Gentrification made Silver Lake whiter and straighter but there is still a very large gay presence there.

Palm Springs, the second gayest city in the US and the gayest in California, is almost like a gay retirement community (The gayest city in the US is Wilton Manors, FL, near Fort Lauderdale).
