...two large wineries are petitioning the state to allow them to clear 2,000 acres of redwoods and Douglas firs to make room for new Pinot Noir vineyards.

On one side are vintners eager to satisfy the public's growing taste for California Pinot Noir, a varietal that has a growing fan base and is part of the post-recession rebound of the state's wine industry.

On the other are environmentalists who want to protect the ecosystem of second-growth forests still recovering from earlier logging.

Gotta side with the tree-huggers on this one.

Ditto. I love mother nature more than I love my wine....and I love my wine.

Since California is so revenue hungry right now, I wouldn't want to bet against them winning their expansion.

Redwoods are actually not protected except in some limited groves and in Redwood NP and various Redwoods state parks. This would be horrific if they cut down trees that are 800+ years old for vineyards!!!

What I find horrific is that if they're permitted to harvest second growth forest, there will be generations in the future thaty might never have their opportunity to wonder at and enjoy old growth forests as those that die off won't be replaced by others coming up.

Yeah! I know. Silly to think that vintners and others would ever consider centuries and generations down-line. Instant profits rule! And then they die too!

This is NEWS? Anyone driving north on 101 can see the vineyards where forests used to grow.

As much as I like wine and money, I'll side with the tree huggers on this one.

Plenty of other places to grow wine grapes.

If it's the typical third growth on former logging company lands, would it really be an issue other than aesthetics?

Though it takes lots of water it's ideal for vineyards down here. There is buck brush and not trees.
