Especially for those who are out of state, wanting to know what certain neighborhoods or areas are like in a certain town of Ca., try Google Earth. (I'll probably be using it all day now.)

It shows amazing views, as if you're walking down the street. Buildings, neighborhoods, houses, parks, etc. It really helps in deciding if you want to move to a certain town, but can't visit there first. It gives you a feel of the personality, etc. of the area.

I just explored some of the Sacramento streets. And just saw the apartment and street of a place I'm thinking of renting. Nice.

Google Earth

If you just want street views you don't need to download Google Earth you can just use Google Maps.

True, but Google Map excludes some streets, you can pick those up on Google Earth.

It's so much better than road maps. You can see everything; trees, stores, houses, parks, as if you're right there.

I use Street View a lot before I go places, especially before any relocation scouting trips. While it's still no substitute for actually being there, doing some homework on Street View has definitely saved me time and helped me narrow down areas.
