Oakland Tops The List

According to statistics released earlier this month by Federal Bureau of Investigation, cities in Northern California run the gamut from the most dangerous in the state to zones that are virtually crime-free.
The San Francisco Business Times complied all those stats into a single list ranking all the cities in California based on their rates of violent crime per capita in 2010.
Check out the full list here.

Other than the few small cities at the top of the list it seems pretty status quo.

Its not very popular with my neighbors.

Our city has been on a huge upswing over the past oh, 15 years and we have seen a huge influx of educated and wealthy folks, artists, restauranteurs, intellectuals, yuppies, hipsters etc, but this crime problem persists.

Ultimately I dont think families are taking account for their wayward sons, brothers, nephews, cousins etc.

The police is viewed antagonistically by too many folks, much of that is not totally unfounded btw, but at the end of the day, these are OUR streets and WE should be at the forefront of making sure they are safe.

Until Oaklanders themselves take the initiative to stop this, crime in the flatlands will continue, ironically, even as many of these crime ridden neighborhoods somewhat gentrify, become more family oriented and quite frankly more livable.

That said, its a shame that so many people only know our city by its crime ranking...there is so much more.

Actually if you have money to afford the hills, Oakland is one of the nicest places you could ever live in.

Something like 70-75% of the crime in Oakland is concentrated in a few neighborhoods. If you don't live in one of those places, you don't have much to worry about. That's what these stats don't tell you.

All I know is that as an occasional visitor, I find downtown Oakland is MUCH more pleasant than downtown San Francisco.

That's usually the case for most cities on these lists.

It would be an interesting thing to review. For example, SF has high crime and lower crime areas. But equivalent nicer neighborhoods in Oakland have lower crime than the similar ones in SF. So most neighborhoods have higher than average crime than similar ones in other places.

So generally in most cities crime is concentrated. I think in Oakland it is ridiculously concentrated.
