Curmie, throw out the microwave.

Three generations of real barbecue, California Red Oak, top block sirloin, and beer. Served with the beef is Pinquito beans (only found in California Rancho country) garlic bread, and green salad, that is it.
Here is my grandfather barbecuing for Eastern Customers at the family cabins on the headwaters of the Santa Ynez River, 1934. Note the ties and vests on the Eastern dudes, note the de rigueur knee boots on my Grandfather, snake boots you know. The Barbecue is still there.

Open fire cooking with local hardwoods. Nothing better for a true California BBQ.

I prefer old dried grape vines myself. However oak will do.

I scored a couple of hickory rounds someone was going to use for firewood

I've got 4 smokers and 6 BBQs.

I love BBQ grilling. Using wood is a must, but charcoal is OK -- better than using gas that provides no flavor at all.

Fruit woods go really well with wild game birds. I like apple myself when smokecooking pheasants.
