It doesn't look like there are any good routes directly from Fresno to the coast. So how far is the nearest good beach from that area?

Cayucos along with some of the areas on Monterey Bay are about 10 to 20 miles closer than Avila. After that, Avila and Santa Cruz are both about the same distance away from Fresno. Depends upon the beach experience you want.

Moss Landing beach. Mouth of the Salinas River.

You can go swimming & wind surfing in the San Luis Reservoir O'Neill Forebay. At least you could.

Its about 2 1/2 to 3 hours drive to the beach (any beach).

Moss Landing a good beach? It is always frigid there. I'd say the closest good beaches from Fresno are either Santa Cruz or Pismo.

Fresno to (according to Google Maps):
Pismo Beach: 146 Miles / 2 Hours 52 min
Avila Beach: 144 Miles / 2 Hours 47 min
Monterey: 155 Miles / 2 Hours 46 min
Santa Cruz: 160 Miles / 3 Hours 20 min

Plenty of cow crap coming down the slough from the dairy farm too. I'd pass.
