Hi. I got a job transfer to SLO 3 months ago then got laid off after being here a month. I have had zero luck finding any kind of ft work. I work in the home improvement/retail/warehouse fields. Does anybody who's more familiar with this area know of any surrounding towns where I may have more luck securing full time work? The college kids in this town have eaten up all the jobs it seems. On a side note I really like San Luis. (no fast food drive thru took some getting used too lol). It's a very quaint kind of town and people for the most part are friendly. I would be pretty bummed if I had to move back to the Midwest so any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi jc76,

Glad you made it out here. Yes, SLO is a very nice part of CA. And its a slow growth area due to the lack of job opportunites. Many people would like to live there longer term including college grads from Cal Poly. But there's simply not enough jobs to sustain a larger work force.

Sorry to hear about the layoff. CA is a huge state with many economic centers/businesses of various sizes. So I think you should be able to find something vs. having to move to the midwest for work. I would start with the surrounding towns such as Los Osos, Morro Bay, Santa Margarita, Pismo, Atascadero, Paso Robles, etc... Then expand your net. There is a Home Depot in Atascadero for example. The further out you go from SLO the better your odds because you won't be competing with the overabundance of college kids flooding the local job market. I don't know what your transportation situation is. But this may require a move within the state to an area with more jobs related to what you can do.

The other option is to consider something new like landscaping, handyman home repairs, trucking, Fedex/UPS delivery (they pick up during the holiday season), etc... depending on your skills/abilities/interests.

Derek

Check with Miners Hardware, they have 5 or 6 branches and treat their employees well.

Check with OSH, Arroyo Grande Paso and Lowes in Paso.

Pace lumber or Briscoes hardware and lumber in Arroyo

Try Farm Supply, again, multiple branches.

Home Depot in Atascadero, San Luis (the most unknowledgable staff I have experienced at a Home Depot) and in Santa Maria.

I'm of no pragmatic help regarding jobs but you made it out here, you really like S.L.O. (you're eating less fast food ) and now don't you give up!
Keep the faith.
There's always a way.
That's what my old and wise friend says anyway and i have to believe him.
Good luck in finding a job.

In case you can't get anything in that area, you'd have to move toward one of the larger population centers. The Central Valley places like Fresno or Bakersville might have more of your kind of work (I don't know how their economies are right now) and are cheaper, but hellish to live in. You might try as far south as LA, the coastal cities are so much more liveable. Of course you can easily check job listings and rents on Craigslist and in the main city newspaper websites.

Thanks for all your replies. Yeah I'm trying for Ventura area now. I just want to avoid going back to Indiana at all cost. I was there my whole life n hated it. I am really starting to like SLO, but don't.think it will be as nice if I'm living in my subaru lol. But then again it may beat the sub zero temps and nothingness of the great lake area. Lol.

Ventura is a nice place with a lot more businesses especially along Hwy 101 heading toward Oxnard.
