If you lived in Bishop or Mohave it would be a decent day trip

You could fly to Mammoth from either San Jose or LAX. Why does this have to be a day trip? Why not stay overnight?

Book Flights to Mammoth Mountain - Airfare Starting at just $59

Mammoth has some great hotel/lift ticket deals. I had a 3 night with 6 lift tickets for $200.

Doing the kamikaze run from the LA area is doable, especially from the IE or Santa Clarita Valley.

but careful of the police near Bishop, they are brutal... you know Bishop is a one horse town and catching Speeders is the big "sting operation" for the cops there

Been there, done that got stung in a speed trap entering the town - going form 55 down to 25. It was ridiculous one year. Its a major revenue builder for a small town.

I also did the kamikaze run from LA. Left at 2:00 AM to get to the slopes when they opened. Skied all day and drove back at ~ 12:00 PM. Crazy stuff. You're bettter off spending the night or sleeping in your car on the drive back, seriously.

Closest civilization depends on what civilized means to you. If you google it and head south you have Bakersfield still ~ 5 hours away. Fom the north you have Reno ~ 4 hours. Anything else you better plan on more than one day. Forget the Bay area as most of the passes will be closed or take a really long time. Best approach with the least snow is from the south.

If you have a pilot license, it should be possible to rent a small aircraft and to fly to Mammoth in the morning and back in the evening. The flight from Riverside to Mammoth should take about 2 hours one way. But I bet it'll cost you more than a night in a hotel.

Its not a day trip from any metropolitan area. Period. Its not like freakin' Big Bear - its hundreds of miles away.
