I live in Delhi (Del-high) New York. Does anyone know how Delhi (Del-high) California got it's name? Our town was named after Delhi (Del-ee), India. It's not a name you see everyday.

Lightbulb How Delhi, California got its name

Delhi, California (Del-ee and not Del-high) is indeed named after the city of the same spelling (and pronounciation) in India.

Situated in the southern San Joaquin Valley about 20 miles north of Bakersfield, it reportedly got its name from the India community where it was reportedly hot, as Delhi, California is during the summer. Hence the naming of the San Joaquin Valley agricultural locale to reflect the Indian one.

Glad to help you out on this question.

Its located in the northern san joaquin valley between livingston and merced. Mainly a farming/agricuture community. The weather is not the same as the bakersfield area btw, it rains more and is cooler in the summer.

That area has a large population of Asian Indians. Here is a wikkipedia link:

Exclamation Yes But......

Delhi's ( Del-High's ) population of East Indians did NOT begin until the VERY late 1980's. Before that only Farmers, Business people , made up of , Caucasian , Japanese & Hispanic's were the ENTIRE town's residents. All of whom had the above mentioned ( Farmer's, Business People ) careers. Also until the late 1990's & 2000's when they started tearing out the Farm land and building " new " tract housing, Delhi's Population was only 3,280 people. The Population sign coming into town now says 8,022. That sign is so wrong! Make it more like 11,000 ( in that area ) and MOST NOW are East Indians. Check your Merced Co Planning Commission for Exact Stats.

All the growth in that area is because of High Bay Area living. Only the highly educated Indians can afford to live in the Bay Area and most of them are forced into the central valley. I belive the biggest employer for those people is Foster Farms and other related industries like Trucking and Commerce. Otherwise it has a reasonable cost of living considering your under 2 hours to the Bay Area.
