My partner has accepted a professor position at CSU in Turlock. We will be relocating to Stanislaus County this summer. We are looking at residing in either Modesto or Turlock. We are in our 40's and come from Fort Lauderdale, FL. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated - pro's / con's. Where ever you recommend can you also recommend neighborhoods that are considered residential/safe as well? Thanks! Any other tidbits you would like to offer are welcome too!

Default Moving to Modesto

If your partner is going to work in Turlock live in Turlock. Turlock is safer (relatively) and Modesto is not that far away if you seek what is there for entertainment, shopping, etc. I grew up in Modesto and went to school at CSUS. It has changed a lot. I am not an expert on safe neighborhoods anymore but you can tell a lot buy just driving arouind and looking. Neighborhoods can change quickly in the valley towns so be sure and look beyond just the street you are looking at. Go out in all directions a reasonable distance to find out if the area degrades.

I know I'm responding to an old post, but Turlock has really come a long way in the past few years. Top-notch dining and an awesome brewpub called Dust Bowl.

Dust Bowl is boring lol, Hero's was the best in Modesto until they died. Would still rather go to Chevy's.

Turlock is becoming more crime infested too, but Modesto and Ceres still claim the prize each year.

I live in Turlock currently and work at the CSU as a professor. I also moved from Florida just last year.

You should PM me!

We are a couple in our early 30's, no kids. I recommend living in Turlock, anywhere north of Monte Vista.

Oakdale & Turlock were pretty nice towns, when my son lived nearby 20 years ago.....
