I thought native Caifornians only ate maize.

I was born and raised in CA and "comfort food" or "down home" or "southern" has never been 'the norm' for me, nor a 'staple' of my diet - ever. I don't think I've ever eaten a "biscuit and gravy" or a "chicken fried steak" or anything even remotely similar. Those things just look gross to me! I don't recall ever seeing my parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins every eating that stuff either, and suffice it to say, my kids don't indulge in that fare either. .............. We pretty much tend to stick to watercress, tofu, seeds, fruits, and nuts.

No chicken fried steak or bizkits when you were enjoying your purgatory in Texas?

Hell No!!!

Staying true to myself, I sought out the best sushi joints, ate salads, indulged in a prime steak once in a while (medium rare, of course!), ate fish (which is primarily what I eat anyway), and had BBQ a couple of times, but BBQ aint my "bag".

The CEO of Cracker Barrel was on CNBC awhile back and a caller asked him this exact question. He said that extensive market analyis over the years has shown them that a CB in California would not be profitible. He added they have no plans to open one in CA either. Contrary to what other people have posted here, there has never been a Cracker Barrel in California, whether in Fremont or San Diego. Fremont just had a Deli which had nothing to do with the chain restaurant.

The Cracker Barrel announced plans in 2003 to open a CB in Victorville, CA right on the 15 freeway. It never came to pass. I think Victorville would have been a good location for them since millions pass there to and from Vegas.

Correct! The only Cracker Barrel in San Diego had nothing to do with the restaurant but was a place that sold cheese, like a Swiss Colony. I can't even talk about Cracker Barrel (restaurant/Country store) here in San Diego because people will say "Oh I use to like to buy cheese there."

Never was one in San Diego and sadly for me there will never be one. Yuma is a yucky place to drive through on my way to Tucson with one exception...Cracker Barrel

Definitely strange since the Lakewood location had the corporate signage and everything

Great restaurant. Too bad they're gone.

edit

Apparently there is some controversy over the Lakewood location. It might not have been part of the original corporation - http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/.../t-531762.html

i think the ceo of cracker barrel i wrong. i can think of multible location in cali where they would do well. millions of people travel thru Ca. on vacation.especially the I-15, and the 5frwy. golden corral finally built in Hesperia-Victorville. they are jammed packed daily.
