I've come to love and appreciate the Central Valley over the couple years I've been here, but that's about the LAST place that meets the criteria of someone dreaming about "living in California".

I'm not dissing those areas and i recognize their virtue (although they do not appeal to me personally) but i was just pointing out what seems to be obvious but maybe that's presumptuous of me.
And the air quality is an issue imo especially if one has children but i am particularly bothered by bad air after having lived in the city for many, many years.
I just can't tolerate it and it took a toll on my health.

For her, climate could have been a factor, too. Ohio has extreme weather (it gets as cold as it does hot 'n humid). But she did not specify much. In fact, you're right ~ she did disappear.

She (OP) probably saw all the fighting in here, was like and fled in terror - nevermore to entertain the thought of a life in California!

Orrrr ... more likely: never to entertain the thought of consulting cdf again ... California is great ... the forum?: a maelstrom ... loveable though, if one appreciates insanities.

Yeah, MtnSurfer's absence may be testimony to that ... the most even keeled, no nonsense poster on the CA has split.
Maybe he did so because the CA has gotten kinda toxic lately.
And Snort ... another balanced guy who stayed out of the b.s. ... has he gone too?

Maybe the o.p. hasn't returned because of the rude and nasty comment made about her single status.

Snort? Balanced guy? He will laugh at that if he reads it ... Nah, Snort's just busy right now. He'll be back

Snort can make a funny out of most anything but yeah, it's my sense that he's quite balanced and also kind despite his sometimes biting wit.
I've never read a mean spirited or nasty comment (funny or otherwise) by the guy.
And i read subtext too and fairly well.
But who knows? ... i could be wrong and he could come along and prove it.
It'll deflate me Snort if you do so please be nice ... i've had a really bad day ... year actually.

Fruits and Vegetables in California have a tendency to be better and cheaper than the old shrink wrapped junk found in super markets all over this nation.
Not to open a can of worms, but that wasn't my experience at all.

When I moved to CA from DC some ions ago, yes, my rent stayed almost the same, but only because we down-sized from a 3-story townhome to a tiny condo.

Even though our place in CA was 1/3 the size of our place in DC, I was paying 2-3x times the heat / electric (I even called to make sure we weren't given the wrong bill lol), yet we were using far less power since our things were still being shipped, and we were on the water so we didn't even have AC.

Gas was more expensive.

Sales tax was more expensive.

Taxes on paychecks, yup, more expensive.

Food and even fresh flowers were more expensive.

I could keep going...

I definitely had CA sticker shock, but it was all worth it to be in the state I love. I'd rather be frugal and happy, over financially whimsical and miserable.

Just my personal experience, and 2 cents.
