Remember the proposal to pipe Columbia river water south to CA? That was a good one.

Our farm has paid an annual installment for California Aqueduct water since the early 1960's and we have never seen a drop.
You are playing an old 1970s type "Ecotopian" tape. No one is suggesting any such extreme measures.

A modern distribution system would go far to reduce wasted energy and losses. Meanwhile, modernization of the actual irrigation gear at the field level is another area to reap benefits. You know all this already.

Yes.

But it is a nice thought: California emptied of -- oh, say, 75% of its current population ...

I do have to thank you, I have heard the right wing babble about the State of Jefferson, and I remembered a book where the same geographic area actually became a liberal paradise, but, I had forgotten the name of it.

Ecotopia, By Ernest Callenbach.

Just think what a great state would be if we moved the urban areas to, say, Kansas.

My grandfather wrote in his diary about driving from Santa Maria to San Francisco in 1933, he was so pleased that almost the whole road was paved.

A good state in those days.

"Human" is like a weed making plans to distribute itself more and more in the garden... wait till the gardener comes.

The so called gardener is called modernity. The combination of relative affluence, epicurean tendencies and general existentialist mentality is causing a baby bust in successive developed countries. As newer places develop it's hitting there too, even harder than in the Western industrial nations. 100 years from now they won't know what hit them as the full impacts of the demographic implosion fester.
