Dr. Michael F. McLean, the president of Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula, stated that the college will not comply with the Obama administration's mandate to provide health insurance covering contraception.

"'Frankly, I don't see how we could comply with it,' said Michael F. McLean, leader of Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula, diving into a controversy dividing Congress and the country. 'It's requiring academic institutions to subsidize or potentially subsidize medical procedures and contraceptive pills, the use of which is contrary to the Catholic faith.'"

Next, I want to see a California school board take a similar stand against SB48. The time for civil disobedience is long overdue.

"Render unto Caesar" certainly has its limits.

Who cares whether its contrary to the Catholic faith? This is just guaranteeing the availability of contraception.

This is actually funny because the college isn't allowed to restrict employment based on faith, yet it wants to insist that all its employees follow its dogmas. What a worthless institution....just close it.

Non-issue now, as the administration have apparently caved to the papists. Bad timing for this, as it's election time. They'll get it through next time.

Not really....its more so a wording change than anything. Now its the health insurance company that will have to provide the coverage.....and in 2 years everyone will have coverage under some plan so it works out the same.

Employer's are now out of the loop and insurance companies will provide the bf coverage directly to the policy holder...I like where this is going.

What's actually funny is your glib ignorance. This college can and does restrict employment based on faith. All professors at this institution take an oath of fidelity to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church.

That doesn't appear to be the case. It seems that employers still have to contract with providers or pay for the insurance somehow. Ultimately they are still footing the bill. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's how this is being received.

Besides, it's still unjust to insurance companies. Insurance providers are run by persons who may, after all, be Catholics. So this is going to shut practicing, believing Catholics out of the health insurance business entirely. A proper response on the part of the Church would be to launch its own non-profit insurance company that doesn't cover contraceptives, etc. - but that appears not to be an option under this "compromise".
