I heard that San Jose was a good idea. Basically I've been across the entire state. I don't mind living ANYWHERE in the state, but ideally I want SoCal. I wonder if the SF Valley is doable.

Yes.
What do you mean when you say NorCal o.p.?
Be specific.
People are trying to help you be real for your own sake.

San Jose is great if you're a software engineer making six figures married to the same.

San Jose is not cheap and where it is relatively inexpensive, you may not want to be.
S.J. is in Silicon Valley territory.

Well the guy that advised me to go to San Jose must be a complete idiot then. Sorry. To be honest, like I said I'll take anywhere in the state while I build myself. As you can hopefully tell, I have a good head on my shoulders so I think this is 100% doable with the right mindset.

How much will you be able to pay a month for a rental?
There are affordable places in the state but they won't be near the coast.

And nothing's affordable without money. Realistically, someone with $5k and no income should be looking to rent a single room at most. Not a studio apartment. A room. Say that's $500/mo. Since life costs more than just rent, figure that $5k will last 5 months tops, assuming none of it is eaten up getting here, getting a car registered, etc.

Problem is.. some of it WILL be eaten up going there. About a 500 dollar plane ticket one way.

So no car? How do you plan on looking for work, then getting there?
