Tradition, we carry on the highest level of civilization yet reached by man, the Californio Rancho tradition.

So far so good ... 46 replies ... not a moderator in sight ... no fist-fights ... no car bombs ... no tar and feathers ... no invocations of spirits -- though I expect with all this discussion of smoker / bbq cooking, spirits will enter the conversation soon ... what's a good bbq without beer, wine, whiskey? So, everybody's sticking to the game plan ... an example of Rodney King's dream realized

My contribution to the bbq scene? None: never touch the stuff ... raw veggies, fruits, nuts, and a fair amount of fish, fowl, lamb, venison, but never fuss over it. I just eat to live ... plain ... boring -- y'all sound like you live to eat ... pretty cool, I guess. Carry on. Just remember: keep it tied to California or the moderators will spoil the bbq. Californio Rancheros, works ... bringing wood down from the Sierras ... roasting the wild boar harvested in the California backlands ... Hell, reminicising about A&W root beer and burgers works -- long as the A&W was in California and you say so.

And, speaking of burgers, California, and A&W -- assume all you state history nuts are aware that A&W started in Lodi, where Ray Allen set up a root beer stand at a parade for returning veteran's in 1919 ... people liked his brew ... by 1922 he took on a partner, Frank Wright ... they combined initials: A&W ... the rest is [California] history.

The diverse geography and climate, so much to see in the same state. You would see high country, giant forests, sand dunes, beaches, volcanoes and so much more. Yes, California even have geysers and hot springs. If you're in San Francisco, it would be 65 degrees and about 10-15 miles inland and you would experience 90-100 degrees.

This gets me thinking.. Wild game, can be tough and get dried out. Also Nullgeo reminds of us of eating to live verses living to eat..... Do you ever go luau in the woods?

Dig a pit throw rocks in build a fire let it heat up rocks, toss game meat in wrapped in foil, if you do not have corn leaves or big fancy tropical stuff. Buiry, come back 8 hours later or so dig your dinner up and eat.

The wilderness slow cooker frees up your day while dinner is cooking....tough meat comes out real tender too....

Guess this isn't the place to mention New England lobster and clam bakes on the beach so I'll shift to Shakey's Pizza and Bob's Big Boy, both staples while in college in CA - two essential food groups!
