Just as I suspected, it didn't take this thread long to become about politics. In just a few more posts, I suspect it will turn ugly and I will be departing.

To the person that was so upset at those of us trying to keep this thread light (since we foresaw what was likely to become of this thread), are you now regretting the not-so-nice rep. comment you made? lol

Can't we all just smile, play nice, and get along?

The Catholic Church has been marrying interracial couples for 2000 years. Some of the most prominent early settlers of Alta California were mestizo, including a fair number of governors.

As part of the consorted effort of CD posters to stop bickering... I will say I agree with you Pilgrim...

Am I correct in saying a Catholic will be more accepting of an interracial marriage between two Catholics than say a same race marriage between a Catholic and a Protestant?

Different cultures different belief structures, cause varying degrees of acceptability on this subject... Surely it is not a straight up Conservative/Liberal political issue...

Me: Even though I am "pure blood" east German/Polish (Depending on when and where you draw a line on a political map) I am quite proud of my Hun/Mongolian blood... Yep one can see the influence, with high cheek bones and little body hair from 700 + years ago!.....

Point being, interracial hanky panky, is as old as humans... What changes is our acceptance, of these things... I see that as a progressive trait. Progressive in the sense of progress, not in a political sense... See Pilgrim, you were right.. all us non Catholics are just catching up to you...

Yes, absolutely. Doctrinally speaking, race and ethnicity have never been an obstacle to marriage for Catholics. On the other hand, mixed religious marriages are canonically forbidden without a dispensation from the bishop. That's my understanding anyway. Furthermore I don't believe that the Church will sanction the marriage of a Catholic to an unbaptized person for any reason (but I could be wrong .... I should look it up).

Prudence is another matter. An Italian family might prefer their daughters not marry Poles, Irishmen or Filipinos, but such decisions are left to the parties involved.

When the laws of certain American states forbade interracial marriages, there was some disagreement among American Catholics as to whether the Church should comply. The "right to marriage" is not absolute from a Catholic perspective, it was argued, and the Church should generally try to work with local laws and customs. I'm kind of on the fence about this question in particular.

I'm interracially married myself, going on 21 years. We've never had a problem even in California's most conservative political circles. I've known people who expressed disagreement with interracial marriage on prudential grounds, but in California the same prudential considerations will lead to an interracial marriage now and then.

Given my own economic proclivities, you'd classify me as being part of the so called "Right."

You are highly inaccurate characterizing all on the so called "Right" as being racist.

In point of fact, hard core racists tend to self select into more far flung political factions such as the National Bolsheviks, National Socialists and other parties organized around the ideologies of "White Nationalism."

Knock it off with the BS political pigeon holing pal.

BTW, nothing wrong with discussing politics, religion, or absolutely any controversial topic you wish. I just think those topics tend to lead things down a slippery slope and, just as in real life, some good judgement should be used on C-D and those topics should be reserved for the Politics, Religion, and Controversies boards. That's why they were created, after all.

That way, on those boards, everyone who is on the conversation knows what they're getting into and has agreed to it and unsuspecting posters on other boards aren't subjected to the hostility that often comes when a normal thread turns political or religious (which, for some reason, so many do). And yes, we can jump off when it turns ugly, but things turn ugly so frequently that it does kind of get old (and typically gets the thread off track). Just my 2 cents.

On that note, I'm off to the happier Dogs board. I need something to keep me entertained until it's warm enough to go outside again. Maybe I should just break down and get cable. lol

Try to be nice to each other.

OMG! I am really not liking you about now! I'm Deep in the Heart of Texas and missing both California and Hawaii right now.

But you are correct about mixtures in Hawaii, it tends to make quite the beautiful human, physically at least!!

I amnot sure how politics got into this thread but leave it alone..

IMHO, the people are meeting others and discovering that they have lots of interests in common. If you leave culture and artificial bias out of the equation you will find men and women are made for each other! Funny how that works out?
