We need to be about 1 hour from a major airport, want a primarily English speaking community that is safe and not full of small children (ours are in college) in Southern California. I know this is pretty vague but it's a start - thanks for any suggestions!

Any of the beach towns in LA or Orange County should fill those three needs. Expensive though...

We know it'll be a huge adjustment as far as what we can get for our money. We're on Realtor.com looking all the time with $400,000 as our maximum. Seems to give us lots of homes for sale in the Temecula, Canyon Lake, Lake Elsinore, etc. area. Are they bad areas? Too rural? Thanks for any information.

They're mostly in Riverside County which is in the area known as the "Inland Empire". Its a long way from the beach and they are pretty family oriented communities. My nephew and his young family live in Temecula for several years. Pretty upscale, safe and new, but lots of children due to the nature of the community. And again, its a long drive to the OC beaches.

Canyon Country is within Santa Clarita and its also a pretty nice, new area. Big mix of people - white, Asian, black and Hispanic and fairly upper middle class. Its in the hills above the San Fernando Valley and is also a long drive to the beach (but there is a big amusement park there). I would probably choose it just because its an easy jumping off point to Northern California (being on I-5). There are a lot of great national parks in the Sierra just a three to five hours north of there (Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon).

I had a good chuckle at your comment about an "English speaking" community . Gees, what do you think California is a third world country?

Ohh, scratch that maybe we are...At any rate, try Santa Rosa, my personal favorite. I have been there, they speak english and can can communicate freely with people from Michigan. The weather is superb and it has a close proximity to the "City" if you need an infusion of big city nightlife.

They said southern California. I'm pretty sure Santa Rosa wouldn't fit that criteria.

...unless California was extended up to the Columbia River.

Problem solved!

He did say "english speaking", so Santa Rosa seemed more suitable!

I didn't want to offend anyone and I would enjoy a culturely diverse area, I just am aware that alot of the southern communities have Hispanic as the majority of their residents and I don't speak Spanish.
