Feasible Commutes To El Segundo (San Diego, San Francisco: apartment, renting, transferring to)

Hello Everyone. This is my first post. I am considering a job offer in the El Segundo area. What areas would provide a feasible commute and be relatively safe? Is 20 miles too far out? I was considering areas like Long Beach, Torrance, etc. I have not been to the LA area before and currently live in VA.

What time do you need to be at work and hope to leave work each day?

Let's say arrive between 8-9 and leave between 5-6. I believe these are considered heavy traffic times??

Can't you find something in El Segundo? Its certainly fine.

Torrance isn’t that far, but if you are renting I’d look as close as possible. For a 1 bd apartment, rents aren’t gonna be that far apart. If you need to save a few bucks, Lawndale and Hawthorne are ok, I’d just pay extra attention to who you neighbors are, secure parking, etc.

Anywhere on the Green Line is good, since you can just ride a bike to work from the station. However, the cities on the Green Line are not what I'd call "safe". Except El Segundo, Hawthorne, and Lawndale.

20 miles is too far. Long Beach is too far. You'll go insane with traffic. I guess you could try living on the Blue Line and transferring to the Green Line, but the general rule in LA is "NO TRANSFERS" Even one transfer and your commute on commuter rail/busses is going to take forever. Commuter rail/bussing only works if you live and work on the same line.

Transfer is easy from the Blue Line to Green Line is easy during rush hour as the trains run every few minutes. It’s a simple go upstairs. It never ceases to amaze me how many people think it is “difficult” to transfer between LA Metro lines. These people should go to a city like London where a line transfer can be a 10 minute walk.

Thank you for the responses. You all have given me some insight. I have visited San Diego and San Francisco and know that traffic is a big deal in considering where to reside. I will have to do some research on this green line vs blue line as an option for daily commute. I am still pondering on the final decision. Thanks again!!

Transfers are not "hard" they just add another 10-20 minutes to your daily commute. That's a big deal, that's like a 20 minute traffic jam dead-stop on the freeway.

Long Beach is too far. Torrance is fine , Redondo Beach (North Redondo isn't as pricy as South) and El Segundo itself has a nice little downtown.
