Most "hillybilly" place in California? (San Diego, El Monte: homeless, beach)

I noticed that on a list of the 100 Most Redneck Cities in CA, both Sausalito (right across San Francisco) and Indian Wells (Palm Springs metro area) were included. But both of those municipalities are wealthy. Is redneck for rich bigots, as well as trailer-park people? How would most Californians define "redneck"? Could very insular, country club culture, exclusionary bigots who are also Christian religious fanatic and hunters/fisherman qualify stereotypically - even if obviously NOT poor, rural and uneducated???

Also, Californians - please recommend some towns/cities, either part of a larger metro area OR 5-10 minutes away that are non-redneck as a rule, that a young/middle aged family like us should consider moving to (we are sick of Chicago) and want to buy an acre or so of land - then build a 2-story home there)..... But also non-ghetto overall, safe, somewhat affordable and where a white/Asian family would feel welcome. We don't want the Central Valley and Sacto cause I heard air quality bad for asthmatic wife.

So far the following seems to fit the bill:
1. Temecula
2. Murietta
3. San Marcos
4. Poway
5. Indio
6. Santa Clarita

If you are simply sick of Chicago, is there any reason why you are specifically choosing California. I'm from Chicagoland area originally (suburbs) and although I love California immensely and there are many, many reasons to want to move here, if you are simply looking to:

1. buy an acre of land
2. non-ghetto, safe, and affordable
3. better air quality
4. towns and cities 5-10 minutes away from a larger metro area

There are plenty of options in northeast Illinois outside Chicago

Do you want warmer weather, diverse landscapes for outdoor recreation (mountains, deserts, oceans), etc?

These would be more of a reason to choose California. If you simply want an acre of land in a safe community, with good air quality, then you could actually get a lot more for your money in areas on the outskirts of Chicagoland.

Slab City is not hillbilly it is down right spooky. Slab City is the perfect place to film a zombie movie. A person needs to go there once and only once to appreciate what they have. I'll bet there are bodies buried back there that will never be found because no ones going to look.

You hit it right on the nail when you mentioned: climate, landforms and ocean...and desert too. Those are serious things I long for after having visiting the Golden State quite a few times. The state for me spells 'diversity' in so many facets; so many regions exist there, it could be like several small, different countries in 1 state! Maybe I'd find my teaching niche out there, unlike here.
