I just accepted a job and will be moving to Santa Barbara from NYC. I'm a single gay male in my 40s. Does anyone have any suggestions for which section of town to live? I would like to have a home with a nice view and friendly neighbors. I'm thinking I'll buy something in the $700-$750k price range. I'll be working near State street in dwntn SB so ideally the commute is less than 15-20 minutes. Any advice is appreciated.

Best advice is to rent awhile then figure out where is best to buy once you have gone native and know the areas.

Concur with Ceece. SB isn't really very big. You won't have a long commute unless you chose to live in another town. Congratulations on your new job and welcome to California!

"I'm a single gay male in my 40s."

Why do you feel it necessary to state your sexual preference?

because he could of said "I'm a single gay male in my 40s and I am moving to Ridgecrest" Then with that valuable piece of information we could stop him from moving to a city like Ridgecrest.

nyctrav, I suggest you rent then once you become familiar and get your preferences on areas then move. Welcome to California and enjoy SB, it is a beautiful city.

The town is rather small (200k-250k even counting the suburbs) so you're not going to have much of a commute no matter where you live. For the $750k price range housing will be tough but all of it will be near the ocean with wonderful climate; my honest best guess (and, full disclosure, I haven't lived there for 10 years so my info might be dated) you're probably going to have to move to Goleta or further out from downtown. Get a good agent though and maybe they can find you something closer especially since the real estate bubble has popped and prices have come crashing down.

There are gay people in Santa Barbara and the area is, as one would expect of coastal California, quite liberal but Santa Barbara is a rather small town so there isn't the big gay night life you'd find in SF, LA, or SD. The good news is you're only a one hour to one & a half hour drive from the second largest city in America so if you want to make weekend trips to LA then literally anything you can imagine can be found there. Even stuff you might not find in NYC. To top it off SB has a truly wonderful quality of life, there is very little traffic (except on the weekends when vacationers descend upon the city), and (for its size) there are many wonderful restaurants. It won't remotely compare to NYC or LA but as long as you understand we're talking about a city of 200,000 instead of 20 million then you should be very happy.

Look, even a straight guy like me knows there are certain considerations a gay man must make when moving some where which hetro people don't necessarily have to worry about. It's a valid concern.
