In 2010, more people were killed in California by deer than by bears. You are 1,400 times more likely to be accidentally killed by a firearm than by a black bear. In 2009, twice as many people where killed in the US by black bear hunters as by black bears. In 2010, more Nevadans were shot to death by hunters than have been killed by Nevada black bears in the last 100 years. Nationwide, you are 2.9 million times more likely to be killed by anything other than a black bear. You are 38,000 times more likely to die in an auto accident.

You are 437 times more likely to win the mega-multi-million lottery and 90,000 times more likely to be deliberately murdered by another human being than you are to be killed by a black bear. And you are 143 times more likely to be killed (not just bitten — but killed) by your neighbor's dog. That means that each time a black bear kills a human being in the US, 143 people have died from dog attacks.

There are some folks here that have talked about carrying weapons in the woods for protection from critters.

I wouldn't worry about black bears, as nearly all fatal bear attacks have been by some form of brown bears. If you had them, I wouldn't worry about wolves either. It's the mountain lion's that'll get you.

I believe there have been exactly 2 instances of humans killed by mountain lions since CA became a state.

Edit: There are no brown bears in CA.

Default Bears, and guns while camping or hiking

Never hurts to carry a gun while camping but I've camped all my life and never been attacked by any critter.

My dad taught me that the only way to kill a bear with a gun is to shoot it right in the eye socket as it is busy tearing your leg off. That way the bullet goes into its brain and doesn't bounce off the skull. This works with a knife, too.

highnlite. You did not give the source of your quote.

I carry for protection from 2 legged critters. I see mountain lions once a year or three, I see bears almost monthly. They walk the other way each time.

The only bear species found in CA is the black bear, but black bears can be brown, black or even blonde.

I've never known a true, serious hiker to carry a gun. I've thru-hiked the Appalacian Trail and section-hiked all of the PCT. No hiker carried a gun. I've encountered hundreds of black bears while hiking and none were remotely aggressive. They are timid animals. Even when they are with cubs, I've never seen them anything but VERY wary of humans.

Oh, come on, take a statistics class. Who's the "you" in these figures? Joe Anybody? Or someone who camps alone in the Sierras ten times a year?

Same here (or i should say me neither) ... in northern New England, Idaho, the southwest and California.
When, in Idaho specifically, i'm hiking with my dog in areas where it's likely that bears are around, i just make a bit of noise now and then so as not to startle a momma with cubs.
I do admit to being quite paranoid about mountain lions. That's the only better thing about the northeast woods for one like me who has a phobia ... no mountain lions.
