I still love parts of CA but it isn't the same and we couldn't make a decent living there anymore and afford to live there.

I still have one sister there but she is leaving when she retires soon and the other sister already retired and left.

It's very sad to feel driven out of a place you love and lived most of your life.
But it's reality. CA is mismanaged and out of control when it comes to regulations and budget management.

decreased revenues to the state are a handicap, exactly how? I thought ya'll righties wanted less government.

That sentence make no sense, if you are a socialist, you need high revenues to the government. Duh.

You can make a decent living her, and afford to live here, tens of millions of people do. However, don't let me dissuade anyone from leaving, I encourage leaving, get this state down to 5 or 10 million souls and I and many others will be happy campers, literally.

Pretty funny I think, Republicans all over the country want less government, except in California?

Is there a Tennessee?
Or is it just that "Promised Land" sung about in church?

Really?
From in front of the tv in N.H. and Carolinas, maybe.
I have hiked and camped all over New Hampsha' ... Up and down every White Mountain ... paddled all around Lake Winnipesaukee and a lot of others ... I absolutely love the whole state (well, except Portsmouth) ... but I have never seen mountains of California's stature, like those in the picture you refer to, in N.H.

Similarly I have hiked and camped the Blue Ridge and Smokies in N.C. Gorgeous country. But far more tame than the photo.

Thoughtful. Upbeat.
But I'm happy Tennessee worked out for you. It has some real nice qualties, I'm sure.

One thing in the South I can't stand is Pine Straw, I don't see it in South Florida luckily, they use it for mulching flowerbeds and etc. It's very flammable and messy.

I've spent some time in the rural areas around Jackson TN and it reminded me of the place I live now. I too am happy someone has found a nice place somewhere else, but it doesn't change the fact that there are spectacular places in CA and a lot of us that live here enjoy them.

Hi,

Not always upbeat I will agree. I love the CA I grew up in and hate to see how badly it has deteriorated.

Beyond the weather there isn't much left that is enough to compensate for the problems. There are places I still go when visiting and enjoy the brief visit, but ... don't want to stay. Moved out 3 times and back twice, but unlikely I will come back again.

Tennessee has many nice qualities, though the humidity is no fun in August, but not as bad as when I lived in the Outer Banks of NC. It has 4 real seasons and I can handle that. I do miss the beach and beach life; BUT it ain't what it used to be.

For those who did not know it when I did, it may still seem great. For those who are young it has appeal and is a good place to get an education and work experience. Buy a house and when retiring sell it and buy one elsewhere for cash. I did.

I agree there are many spectacular places in CA, as there is in many States. Enjoy them to the full, but visit other areas as well, as there is too little time to see it all.

Well, except here you park your car at elevations higher than ya'll got back east, and walk up from there, you are looking at 13,000 foot peaks, largely granite, not much like the Sierra back east.

Leonard -- I first came to California in 1966 ... I only lived there full time for a few years ... life took me elsewhere and I made my commitments to property ownership in Washington state ... however, I have never lost my love for the place and so not only continued to visit over the years, but have actually re-established residency.

So, my point is, even though I still split my time between WA, CA, and Hawaii, I retain my connections -- which are based in appreciation, not deprecation. I haunt this forum as a supporter, not detractor. If I was disillusioned and / or bitter I would simply cease to relate -- I wouldn't hang out to chip sh*t and make it my mission to try to convince others what a cesspool the place is. There are a number of folks on this forum from other states, now living in California, or that have moved away, who seem to be on a mission to deprecate the state. Are you one of those folks? Kinda seems ...

with the lower cost of living; and even trips to an incredible number of neat places without driving across a desert for two days. The desert is one of the neat places, but I do thank everyone who don't visit it, leaves it for usn's.

A couple of California things one won't find in Tennessee or North Carolina, they and the thousands of places like these, make California a bit different than the east.:

Hi,

Yes CA has many beautiful areas, some of the best in the world. Many like the desert while others don't.

California may have more beautiful places, based on its size, than other States. However there is real and equal beauty in most States. I live in an area that has no equal in CA or virtually any other State. But so what? That is just a perk for living here, just as the beach is for CA.

My posts generally are not addressing the beauty, rather the mess that is the State now due to the people (Some not all), crowding, cost of living, and the genuine problems created by the politicians. Living in beauty while dealing with that is not as appealing as living in beautiful surroundings without the same level of problems. Weather and beautiful surroundings can't cover over the major problems plaguing CA. I am sad to see it, but not blind to it.
