Sadly, freeware Dot Bomb 2.0, frankengenetics and Green scamware will never replace them.

That's true. If it weren't for the huge tech talent pool in California I think they both would have left long ago. It's too hard to find some of those skills elsewhere.

High paying engineering and science jobs (like biotech) economically support a region. I read a government-supported article that said that for every ~$110k new biotech job, 2-3 other jobs (of various tiers) are created in a region. These high-salaried workers are going to be the ones paying the meaningful taxes.

The back and forth bickering from both sides with half-truths in this thread is a perfect example of what's wrong with California.

Looks like Capitol One is shipping jobs from Salinas to South Dakota.

SALINAS, Calif. -- The day following Capital One's purchase of the HSBC Salinas site, over 800 employees have been told they will lose their jobs by 2013.

This comes the same day as Capital One has opened a new credit card facility in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Oh no! this spells the end: E N D.
And just after this happened: California to reap windfall from Mark Zuckerberg in Facebook IPO - latimes.com

Run to your local grocery (before it closes its doors for good, of course) and buy razor blades to slash your wrists and throat.

No, it looks as if 800 people are being terminated, if one can believe the article.

Naturally, this corporate takeover/consolidation and subsequent firings stuff happens ONLY in California.

I think you kind of missed the point here. The question would really be will Facebook have future expansion in California, or will it open up facilities/add staffing in other locations?

One has to do with existing businesses, the other has to do with new enterprises.

And....what attracted all those people here? Opportunities.... If businesses weren't being formed, etc the state would be empty.

Anyhow, every year these rankings come out and every year, predictably, the more liberal states are ranked on the bottom despite being home to the largest economies in the nation. The only curious thing is that people still pay attention to them....
