Any areas that aren't in the middle of nowhere where I could get an at least 1,000 sq. ft home for $500k?

Well I mean there are some but they're only far away from everything like close to the Oregon border or in the Mojave Desert.

A friend of mine just picked up a house with 30 acres, a barn and 6 car garage, 24 miles out of Paso Robles for $300,000, he is happy.

Have you actually done a search or are you just trolling from your parents basement in Wisconsin?

In all but a few locations, you can find smaller single family homes for under $500,000 in good neighborhoods.

Thinking of San Diego county. Would love Los Angeles county, but doubt there would be any decent places for $500k
