We just enjoyed a fantastic evening with the Paradise Symphony Orchestra. That a community of 27,000 has been able to support a symphony orchestra for 54 years strikes me as highly unusual.

But perhaps I'm wrong. Are there other comparably small cities in California with symphony orchestras?

Yes that is unusual but serves as testament to the community and its focus to retain a musical heritage.

Stockton for all its faults has a very vibrant music background. UOP's Music Conservatory and the Stockton Symphony have played a large role in cultivating and encouraging a music culture in this very unlikely of places.

Stockton Symphony

Conservatory of Music

Brubeck Institute

Sounds even better in person. One of my musical hero's while playing the sax back in the day.

Take five this morning.

Thanks, Bulldog. Yes, there are quite a few surprises about Stockton that defy its reputation. UOP is a quality place. My wife is a graduate. And I'm glad to learn more about the conservatory as I have a musical kid or two that I'd like to keep in California.

I can definitely see Bulldogdad taking to Brubeck.

There's also Eureka (pop 27,000): Eureka Symphony Orchestra.

Red Bluff, population 14,000, is even more surprising. Contra its redneck image, Red Bluff is the native home of legendary conductor Robert Shaw! And the community supports a fine Masterworks Chorale and Orchestra.
