California has a series of mountain ranges that run east and west, which is very unusual in the Western US. Starting at the coast, the Santa Ynez Range, and the Sierra San Martin range( I use that term to differentiate between the northern and souther Santa Lucia Range as did Cabrillo. The ranges extend eastward to San Gorgonio above Beaumont Pass.
They can be considered the geographic boundary between Southern California and the rest of the state. Much of this landscape is too rugged for settlement which has given us good wild wilderness.
I took a tour on my moto from the Cuyama Valley below the Sierra Madre, east on a dirt road rising to 5,000 feet on the Cerro Noroest massif, to the end of the road at 8,400 feet then around to the northern edge of the Sespe Wilderness, and return via the upper Cuyama River canyon down to hiway 166 again. I took three days, Which included a meeting of trail advocates at the classic Reyes Creek Bar and Grill, located in the middle of nowhere.

Some of the most beautiful mountain areas in the state are in the transverse ranges. We easily see the Tehachapis (sp?) when going over the grapevine. Of course there are the San Bernardino and the steep San Gabriel mts. The San Andreas fault separates them. My personal favorite are the San Gabriels. One of the best weekends I've ever spent was in Wrightwood one April.
