I was planning a leisurely trip from Portland to LA via 101 and 1. I've been reading about the closures on the Big Sur route in early September. The biggest problem seems to be the part between Pfeiffer Canyon to Ragged Point. All the information I can find (a lot) says that the road is closed indefinitely.

Is there anyone, here, that knows the meaning of "indefinitely"? Are they working to fix the bridge temporarily for the tourist season, or is this a multi-year project, or both?

Thanks.

It's hard to tell where things will stand by next September, but I'd say there is a decent chance that 1 through Big Sur will be open by then. There are people stranded in Big Sur, so getting the full road open again is a priority. In addition to the Cal Trans link, this is a good site for information (and pictures) to help you track progress: https://twitter.com/BigSurCC?ref_src...Ctwgr%5Eauthor

If 1 through Big Sur isn't open, you'll still be able to go south on 101 without any problem in September. And, from 101, you can then take the 46 over to 1 and continue south from there if you'd like. While the scenery along that stretch of 1 isn't as jaw dropping as big sure, it's still quite beautiful, especially Morro Rock. Then, reconnect with the 101 again to head to LA.

Enjoy your trip!
