Converting a regular work or family van allows one to stealth camp anyplace.

It isn't easy but on www.rv.net forum a man named George boonie camped for years in CA in his class C motorhome. He had a blog he wrote in just about every day. He still might be boonie camping, i don't know. He used to spend most winters in Mexico. He spent a lot of time around San Diego, & the Bay Area, Beverly Hill's area, etc etc.

He has 6- 6volt Trojan batteries & several solar panels.

Hmm, I'm thinking maybe a work van might pass as more stealth. But a big garbage truck looking beast like the one from the link would draw immediate attention from just about anyone including local PD. Don't get me wrong, I think they look really cool. But stealth is another story. Speaking of boonie camping, I see a lot RVs parked along the pullouts down Hwy 1 in Big Sur. It looks like it might be ok there since a large section is BLM. I've done it before in our van when the campgrounds were full. One time a ranger came by in the morning and asked what we were up to. However this was after we were returning from taking pictures of the sunrise. I think he was more concerned with possible illegal fishing than where we had slept.

Years ago we would camp at times by the road going up over the range to Hunter Liggett......the road going by the Indians....the Gorge....Arroyo Seco.
Over by Naciemiento Lake, San Antonio Lake...

Some of these area's you can't boonie camp anymore.

Wait ........... Don't they call those "rape vans"??? Those are the things they always tell us ladies not to park next to, or risk being pulled in and never seen or heard from again!

I feel like I was born to leave my state...TN. And based on my wants/needs CA has it all! Just out of my price range for now unless I was to land a great job there(CA). Is there anyone else out there that feels like the state they live in is not suited to them and that CA would be perfect weather they have lived in CA before or not?

LOL, we use to own a conversion van (and would love to again) for just the reasons stated. Great camping vehicle, can park it anywhere unlike an RV, extremely comfy for travel. We are a married couple with four girls If it has that reputation, I'd see it as a plus, keeps people from parking next to me

Yes CA has the perfect weather, if you like CA weather. I was born and raised in CA and left for East TN and it is unlikely I would move back. Overall, it is much nicer here. CA has its strong points, but it has changed so much since I grew up it just isn't for me now, just for the weather.

I've always really liked the Toyota pickup-based RV's, like the Chinook. Someday, I may get one, redo it, and swap out for a 4x4 drivetrain... or, a 1JZ twin turbo engine
