Hello Everyone,
Moving from New Jersey and would like some advise. Will be working around the Bay area and Sacramento - occasionally will have to drive to Eureka and Reno. Vacaville seems to be a centralized location. Parts of Roseville were attractive. Looking to rent an apartment and will need a garage. Anyone have any ideas were to look/live? I would like to stay in the 1,000 to 1,500 price range getting best bang for my buck. Not interested in Vallejo. Thanks for any suggestions.

The Sac Region is your best bet in getting a nice place for that price.

DON'T move to CA unless you are getting a HUGE cost of living increase. FOod prices are more than double than NJ, car registration is $295 in CA vs $45 in NJ Gas topped $5 a gallon a few months ago -- currently in high 4s. Not to mention tax of almost 8% on EVERYTHING!! Housing prices are no cheaper than in northern NJ but your money goes way further in NJ.

That's odd because housing seems much cheaper than NJ. 350k in Nj will get you a rotted out shack in the ghetto and you still have to pay 12k min a year in taxes. Maybe not in San Francisco, but everything east going toward Sacramento you diffenately get more for your money. I'm not too concern with gas because I would expense it out. The high state income tax and earthquakes are my concerns.

Sacramento area would be in your price range, I don't know too much about it but Placerville is a nice little town at the foothills, for closer to town Folsom is relatively nice. Avoid greenback and Antelope areas, and anything along Watt ave. that's about all i know lol, I'm sure someone with more knowledge will pipe in.

Food prices in Sacramento aren't higher than the areas of New Jersey I'm familiar with, around the Philly area. Gas is higher than NJ by about $.50 per gallon. And as far as the sales tax goes, just like New Jersey food and clothing are exempt from taxes.

The OP was looking to rent, so property prices are irrelevant. Rent is about the same in Sacramento as it is in the areas around metro New York or Philly.

Food costs about the same everywhere.
Gas is maybe a buck/gallon more here, at the outside.
Rent in the Bay Area will flabbergast you, but most other places are more reasonable.
Taxes are taxes, some are higher, some are lower, it all pretty much evens out.
