We now call them the 99%. Beware when you start seeing berets.

I'd worry more about what's going on in Wall St. than what a couple two-bit copper thieves are stealing. The author is a big supporter of Iraq and Afghanistan, and wants us to go put troops on the ground in Iran. None of that excuses what desperate people are willing to do, but it pales in comparison to the hundreds of billions of dollars spent on those wars, money which we borrowed. There are simply bigger fish to fry. If the Catholic church spent more time, energy, and resources trying to help people and less trying to cover up that it habitual likes to abuse children, maybe it might have a little more sanctity. Just saying. Not that that justifies stealing, but if you're going to steal from someone, why not a bunch of pedophiles and pedophile-protectors? In my moral book, covering up child molestation to save your skin and protect your precious reputation at the expense of the victims is a more serious offense than stealing a few trinkets.

I don't see why it has to be an either/or situation, I'm equally concerned about both, and both have contributed a lot to the problems of the Central Valley....foreclosures, blight/vandalism, etc.
It's not just vandalizing a church, I know in Fresno a lot of areas are almost totally dark at night because of the copper thieves vandalizing the streetlights.

It does bring up why I always tell people that they are better off living in the city here than smaller towns/rural areas when it comes to crime and safety.

I can get behind that. So to speak.

Is Hanson a masochist or what?
This is the third article I've read of his about the horrors of his living experience in CA. It's beyond me why he hasn't left CA already----it's not like anything will ever get fixed in CA---it's only getting worse each year.

Yes, it's so bad we can only hope everyone trapped in this god-forsaken place can escape with their lives a.s.a.p.! As .highnlite has reported: there are 62 paved highways outta here ... plus many dirt roads ... run for your lives!

I will remain to patrol ... it's okay ... you all go on ahead without me ...

This isn't a problem that is unique to California, the San Joaquin Valley, or any other sub-region. While it is worse in some areas than others, it is a problem across the country and a lot of it has to do with regional economics. If there aren't any viable opportunities available in an area it makes crime a very attractive alternative when it comes to making money.

Agreed.

Many of the things that go on in the Central Valley aren't really unique to the Central Valley, but rather a result of a change in rural American society. When you have a large, relatively youthful workforce without any prospects for work, you have an increase of crime. It can be seen in Appalachia, the Mississippi Delta, Eastern Washington, and the Central Valley of California.

Frankly, we have come at a point in society where the city may actually be safer than the rural areas of the US, given the rampant alcoholism rates and drug usage among the adult population, which has a propensity to lead to more crime.

Now, some may cite the lower crime rates of rural areas in the Midwest, such as Iowa or Kansas, but given that a huge chunk of those rural counties are simply becoming depopulated of young, able-bodied people for the city, it's pretty clear why.

If the above is too long to read: BOREDOM = STUPIDITY! That was true 3000 years ago, and that is true today.

Peope stealing metal in SJV has been going on for some time now, Metal theft plays major role in rural crime wave. I don't believe it is something recent that just happened due to 'the economy'.
