I have no issue with the banning of plastic bags but I have a major issue with charging us fees to use paper bags. We have been using paper bags forever without a fee...why now a fee?

This is the pattern I have observed about CA politics. Take away a personal freedom and then tax you for it! Scandalous!

Why not switch to a biodegradable plastic bag vs. banning them? A true green plastic bag


It would be a worthy cause to educate people all over the planet to not dump garbage into the oceans. Or find a way to enforce it and impose hefty fines if caught doing it.

The "out of control" politics as well as the brain dead politicians (using that term loosely) was the primary reason I left California in the mid 90's and when I read / hear about more of these ridiculous restrictions confirms that, even after 17 years, I made the correct move.

I've spent a good deal of time in the water, in the midst of the California Current, directly downstream from the largest input south of the Columbia, namely the Golden Gate / Sacramento / San Joaquin system. Of course all that adds to anything from the Columbia and smaller systems further north. To be honest most of what I've ever seen in the way of flotsam and jetsam has all been of obvious marine vehicular origin - lots of blown foam, lots of plastic shells of floats, booms, bumpers, etc. Then you see the glass and metal on the bottom (obviously dumped from boats / ships). Plastic bags are simply not a major part of what is seen in our marine waters. I'm not saying there is none, it's just not overwhelming.

Alluding to what I wrote earlier I'm going to hazard a guess that the majority of the plastic bags and plastic bag fragments in the North Pacific's gyres are from Mexico and China. Those are the obvious places based on population, level of activity and (lack of) educational attainment levels.

Two observations about your observations:
1. anecdotal observation doesn't qualify as factual
2. it doesn't matter if the majority of bags are from China and Mexico
it matters that every opportunity to reduce the total is taken -- for two reasons:
1. to reduce the total (obviously)
2. but even more importantly, to create habitual basis for responsible behaviors that extend far beyond plastic bags.
