You know I'm with you on this. I would LOVE to hear responses to all the of the points that have been made.

I can't say that I've had the same experience with the homeless littering, but it doesn't take a wild imagination to see your point. Either way, whether someone has a home or not, littering is littering, and the REAL issue needs to be addressed.

I certainly haven't seen any of them out there with us helping to clean up this great planet, or even better, changing any of their other policies to stop their wastefulness in the first place. But they're certainly all over a fee for a bag that now lowers their overhead and creates a profit. If the environment was truly their concern, they'd be doing much more than charging a few cents for a bag.
Egg Zachary! Trader Joe's never had plastic bags anyways but when the stupid.ss law passed, TJ's in Long Beach started charging for the same paper bags that were being given for free before!!

It wasn't long before they -quietly- started given bags again for free. The last week or so, the cashier bags my stuff without me asking for a bag or him/her asking me if I wanted a bag, and there is no charge!
The last few weeks, I noticed Fresh n Easy in Long Beach, bags your stuff in plastic bags, no charge. I am guessing they noticed the negative feedback from consumers and possibly even realized people going to nearby cities/towns where there is no ban (nor even any indication they will ever have one!).

I also agree with 1200RT for his excellent points that might be perceived as racist or prejudice but not, he is right on the money. I noticed a few that were either black or possibly white but typically they are Hispanic. They are not necessarily homeless either, they at least do not look that poor and collecting materials from trash bins/dumpsters is good money so a lot of retired or out of work people are doing it.
I also dislike the fact that they almost always leave the immediate area around the dumpster in a terrible condition where -at least- 10% of the garbage is scattered all over. Littering regardless of the race, ethnicity, is the key problem so this plastic bag ban is off base and miscalculated.

For what its worth, this may have been part of the law passed in LB. Here in SM, its required that markets charge for paper bags, to promote use of reusable bags. May not have been TJ's fault.

I know what you are saying but paper bags are no more or no less reusable than plastic bags, if anything, plastic bags last me a whole a lot longer than paper bags, even the better, sturdier ones TJ's uses.
So, I cannot help but to think that the real agenda behind this seemingly environmentally beneficial bylaw is actually someone filling their pockets with $$. As many of us is for a "greener" planet and go out of our ways to fight for it, I seriously doubt corporations and authorities have the same "ideals" in mind.

They should ban them, I am sick of seeing them along roads and freeways and scattered in grocery store parking lots. It makes the area look super trashy and disgusting.

If people cant remember to bring a reusable cloth bag then they can just buy one, or use a box from the store.

Some stores are now using paper bags too.

They should ban them all across the USA.

They kill animals, litter the environment and are unsightly.

A paper bag will cost you 10 cents at the store beginning next year. Its just crazy how ca is such a nanny state. This ban is going to create headaches for some shoppers.

All legitimate problems, stemming from the littering of plastic bags.

What is your argument against stronger littering legislation, and fighting the people actually causing the problem? Or did you just read the first post and jump straight to the conclusion that they should be banned?

Paper bags are recyclable, and are very useful for collecting junk mail, etc.

The ironic thing about the switch back to paper is, plastic was introduced because using paper was "bad for the environment" (killing trees). Paper bags are also a far inferior product - they rip when wet, handles rip off, etc. It is nice that they stand, though. They are also not useful for disposal of trash (trash can liners) and dog poop.
