In anticipation of a crime wave following the arrival of 14,000 students for the CSUC fall semester, Chico police chief Kirk Trostle is calling on men to return to the practice of chivalry:

"Trostle recommended that if students go out, they travel in numbers with someone sober. He encouraged people to take care of each other, especially women. 'It's called chivalry, what I grew up under,' the chief said. '"You treat women with respect. That's what I hope men in our community will do.'"

Amen to that, Chief Trostle. May your tribe increase! Some practical suggestions for the good men of Chico:

1. Don't allow the women in your company to get drunk. Some 80 percent of student rape victims are intoxicated at the time of the attack.

2. Don't allow the women in your company to have sex with strangers, or even to be alone with them.

3. Don't allow the women in your company to walk home alone after dark.

4. Encourage the women in your company to dress modestly.

Four extremely simple, common-sense, crime-busting acts of chivalry that will turn Chico back into the safe and bucolic oasis it was meant to be.

In other words, you're placing the entire responsibility on the women. Talk about a Neanderthal.

"Don't allow"? I'm assuming these women you're speaking of are adults who can do as they damn well please. Good luck with with trying to dictate to them how to behave. Number 3 is the only suggestion that's remotely feasible.

WP forgot to add "All women will wear the hijab and will not be permitted to drive."

I personally like #2. It would allow men in Chico to be like those in Iran.

This reminds me of the mentality of company mgmt in the film North Country. I guess it worked for them, kinda.

Facts are facts, Curmudgeon. Female behavior matters. Women who don't get drunk in public, don't make themselves available for pre-marital sex, and who avoid the company of those who do - three simple things - diminish their chances of becoming a sexual assault victim to almost zero.

Don't ruin the dream. So many think they can do such things and nothing will happen to them.

A man once asked a group are you "men" or just adult males.

The same applies to the female sex, are they "women" or just adult females.

Age does not automatically grant either maturity or wisdom.

Dumb is as dumb does.

How does one establish a meaningful relationship with a woman without getting her drunk?
