Hello,

I have had a job based in CA since 2008, but haven't registered my out-of-state car yet. I maintained insurance and registration in my home state during this time.

I understand that the DMV will charge substantial late registration fees if I'm upfront on the registration form about the dates which is acceptable for me. Would the DMV file any criminal charges for maintaining insurance/registration from a different state that period while I was a CA resident?

Thanks!

You'll want to double check this but I'm pretty sure they don't press charges for that sort of thing, they will impound your vehicle if you don't pay the extra fines, though.

Here's a link to the penalties: https://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/vr_info.htm#origpenalty

At one time they could go back 3 years of fees and penalties...

I know there are special exemptions for military, certain government employees and students???

Military can keep their home state registration. As for the other, it's not exactly exemptions, but registration is based on residency--i.e. student from Texas who goes to college here as an out-of-state student, can maintain Texas registration the whole time.

To the OP, take your registration card and title down to DMV and get it transferred over. Better now than when someone reports you to CHP Cheaters.

And no, DMV cannot press charges for something like this.
