I don't think they calculate the penalties properly. They stack them, which does not seem to be supported by the plain language of the law.

So for two years plus out of reg, they apply the 10 day penalty, the 10-30 day penalty, the 30-1year penalty, and the 1-2 year penalty, plus the two year plus penalty.

It should just be the two years plus penalty. Because the out of registration period is only one period....not all of them in sequence. Clearly the intent of the legislature is to establish a schedule to reflect what fee is charged based on what period you apply for registration in, not all of the prior periods that would have existed had you applied for registration at those times.

So yah, the fees and penalties are not calculated in accordance with the statute.

Also the DMV can waive the fees in your situation..they are given the authority to do that...check out CVC Section 9562 for the details.

So I'd fight it.

The state is nailing everyone. My fees went up 28.00 to 121.00 for a 33 yr old car. The law states vehicles worth 0-4999.00 are to have a vehicle registration increase of $25.00. Once again we are being hosed by the state. When are people going to realize we are being ripped off by the legislature ? Vote YES on prop 6 this November.

The Ballot is our last best hope...

It worked for Property Taxes via Prop 13...

We also had a recall of a Governor because of DMV fees...

Out of all of this the thing that gets me is why a person has to pay any fee for a vehicle period where the vehicle is not operated on public property???

Please don't believe those lying & sneaky politicians & ads on tv, net & radio. Vote YES on prop 6. Most of the money the state receives from the increasing gas tax & registration goes towards other B.S. including the govt employees pension. Back in april 2017 all registrations increased 10.00 & once again starting in jan 2018 (25.00 -175.00). So since 2017 my tags jumped $38.00 to $121.00. That's pathetic especially for a 33 yr old car. ULTRARUNNER....non ops are a scam by the state. Yrs ago a non op was 5 then 10 then 15 & now 21.00. Look at fix it tickets. They were once no charge then 10 & now 25.00. Ca is a VERY greedy state.
