Yep, Royko was the guy that said most men would rather go bowling than have sex with their wives.

Well, maybe he was confused since they both require balls.

It is called Northern California. And it refers to everything north of the San Joaquin Valley and the bay area. So Sacramento, Arcata, Chico, Lake Tahoe, etc. Bay area to Santa Barbra is what I now consider to be central coast, IMO.

I would have to disagree. The Bay Area is not Central Coast. The Central Coast begins at or below Monterey Bay, and The Bay Area is definitely in Northern California - not Central anything.

We just arrived in "Upstate California", lots of people hitchhiking the highways, lots of dudes french-kissing chicks that look like their sisters. Everyone seems to have a case of Lagunitas Beer with them. Goofy haircuts, meth looking families, lots of bikers and hells angels, hippie-dippies, and lots of folks from Sacramento.

They checked our passports in Willits and asked us the purpose of our visit, what towns we will be visiting, and if we wanted to buy a bag of weed. :-) The passport Stamp consisted of a profile of President Jefferson smoking a reefer, and Nirvana wearing a wreath of Marijuana leaves.

I read the articles on Upstate California and although I don't seem to care what they want to call themselves I will say that other areas have tried to reinvent themselves with a new name. I don't know anyone that calls it Upstate California though.

Back in the mid 1980's the Gold Coast was used to describe Western Ventura County. Back in the early 80's a lot of people moved to the area, specifically Oxnard and Port Hueneme to be close to the Beach. They didn't like the name Oxnard or Hueneme (Pronounced Wy-knee-me) and wanted a more exciting name for the area. I remember leaving the Oxnard and Hueneme area in 85 and returning to the Gold Coast in 87. The LA news stations refered to it as the Gold Coast, business's opened up using the name in there advertising or even the name of there business, as in Remax Gold Coast, or Gold Coast Dentistry, The bus service for the Western part of the county changed its name from South Coast Area Transit to Gold Coast Transit in 2007. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Coast_Area_Transit

The name still lingers but most people in the area don't even remember that we were called the Gold Coast. Oxnard is Oxnard and it isn't going to change any time soon. About the only area that a name change had an impact was with the Oxnard Shores area. People bought homes at the beach in what we all call Oxnard Shores. The home owners that were transplants wanted the city to change the name of the beach. It became known as Mandalay Shores in reference to its proximity with Mandalay Bay a home development with boat docks in the back of the home, built on an intercoastal waterway system that opened in the early 70's. Over the years the housing development has grown, most of it not called Mandalay Bay, but newer names added on depending on the development. The Oxnard Shores name came down and the Mandalay Shores name went up. Wasn't too long before people had a problem with the name. Now the sign says, "Mandalay Shores" with the term "an Oxnard Shores neighborhood" below the new name.

A brief history of Oxnard

Oxnard is the located 60 miles northwest of Los Angeles, and is the largest city in Ventura County. It is situated on the western edge of the Oxnard Plain, a 180 square mile area of the richest agricultural land in California. The Oxnard family developed a sugar beet factory as one of the first local industries. The American Sugar Beet Co. closed its doors in 1958 because vegetables had replaced sugar beets as the primary local field crop.
